Radiata decking
NZ Pine is the most commonly used timber in decking and fencing.
It's the cheapest option available. Correctly maintained it is durable and will last for 20 years or more.
It can be vulnerable to damage in heavy use.
Will be prone to swelling and shrinking. resulting in uneven gaps appearing and then closing up again.
Talk to us if this might suit your particular build requirement.
Hardwood decking
Hardwood timbers like Kwila, Vitex, or Garapa are extremely durable and hard wearing. They will last for 25 years or more.
They look great if they are cleaned and oiled periodically. Untreated they will get a nice grey appearance over time.
No nasty chemicals used for preservation.
Hardwood timber decks will be twice as expensive as pine.
Send us a message if you want a hardwood deck.
Composite decking
Composite decks are made of 50 % recycled plastic and 50% recycled timber.
The more expensive one can be very durable, cheaper versions will crack under our harsh sun.
Because of the plastics they can get very hot in summer.
Lowest maintenance requirements.
Let us know if this is your thing.
Decking costs in 2023
A basic deck price will depend on several factors:
-
Material ( Pine, hardwood or composite) ( Premium timber or Merch)
-
Size ( The bigger the more piles, bearers, Joists and decking required)
-
Height ( Over 1m adding, stairs, balustrades) ( Over 1.5m adding building consent)
-
Site conditions and distance ( Excavation costs, bracing, travel costs)
-
Design ( Different levels or seating)
If you are on a budget then a 20mm or 30mm pine deck will be your most affordable choice.
If you want to go with untreated Kwila hardwood costs will be slightly higher.
Composite decking sounds nice with practically no maintenance but gets very hot in summer and this is the most expensive choice.
Average square metre price for decking is around $450.
